Lobola vir Erna

1986

"Lobola" is a Zulu word that means "bride price". Our Zulu gardener, Fikile, was adamant: seven oxen were not enough! Erna's mother pointed out that Lobola must be paid in cows, who can multiply, not barren oxen. For the real (love-) story behind this painting, visit here.

One Saturday afternoon we arrived in Pta to visit Pa & Ma. Pa was very excited. He'd been at the kerkbazaar that morning, and had seen something he was sure would change his son's fortunes!

"Daar was 'n pragtige skildery, van 'n man wat visvang op 'n kaai in die see. Nou dis die soort prentjies wat jy moet skilder, my seun! Dit was so mooi. Ek het baie lus gehad om dit te koop!"

"O. Hoekom het Pa toe nie?"

"Nee, terwyl ek nog staan en dink, toe koop 'n ander ou dit."

"Regtig? Hoeveel het hy betaal?"

"Man, die ding was R25"

"Hmmm. Ja... Pa dink ek moet skilderye van vissermanne maak vir R25?"

"Nee, man! Jy kan seker meer vra. Maar die see is so mooi..."

So Zak did...
